Blog 2: I Was Once Nostalgic
Roxane Gay’s “I Was Once Miss America” is quite a read that I enjoyed looking over. It gave me a feel that had me experience laugh at a nostalgic past of my own in grade school. Like the narrator, I’ve had a similar relationship with a book. It was the Horrible Harry series; a childish book of a strange kid with an eye for adventure getting into the most wacky situations. I, too, read these books searchingly for that same feel that I had when I read them for the first time, and it is amusing to ponder why I bother to read such a silly book. Reading the series, I admired his bravery, determination and shamelessness and it ended up having an influence on my personality in a good way. With making such a connection with a piece of literature, I can understand how it could impact a person in a number of ways, unlimited to a stand in morality, purpose, or judgment. The narrator regarded herself as a Jessica, and presented and carried herself in such a manner that represented similar traits as a Jessica from Sweet Valley High. That made an impact in molding the narrator as who she is today in ways such as her character.
