Blog 1: Sense with Genre
Prior to reading chapter one of the Book of Genres, I felt that I had a clear idea of genre as far as determining the purpose of genre and strategies in which an author will use various genres to communicate with their audience. The chapter taught me that an author can utilize genre as a means of expressing their own personal thoughts and interests all while grasping the attention of their audience through that specific genre. With this, an author has a way with creating an impactful message using his/her unique style of writing. Something that I also found noteworthy was the discussion of the use of rhetoric, especially pertaining to the purpose of persuasion. I take interest in rhetoric, noting that I, along with many others, use rhetoric in our everyday lives. Whether it be an anecdote, sarcasm, or hyperbole, it can be concluded that rhetoric is an essential skill that weighs as a heavy factor when trying to present an argument. I would like to learn more about the types of rhetorical appeals an author uses in order to persuade an audience towards a certain call-to-action, as well as the correct timing for when an author should use said rhetorical strategy.
